i understand it's too late to raise now (at last i assume it is) - but i wanted to discuss it now since this is when it's more prevalent
the salary cap absolutely needs to increase every season. it's simple economics:
every season, the majority of our players are receiving raises....but the salary cap remains the same. there are far more players receiving raises every season than there are influxes of prospects (roster players) making the league minimum. almost every single prospect drafted aside from one or two per draft gets sent to the minors....while 100+ RFA's/UFA's receive raises. some of them huge raises.
it's simple inflation and keeping the cap at $65 mil is unsustainable because of it.
a salary cap is supposed to keep teams on an even playing field.....it's not supposed to actually even the playing field itself by diluting everyones roster to the point of every team being mirror images. if we stay the way it is, all our teams are going to look identical...because all of us have no choice, no breathing room. there's no skill in that.
by my calculations 22/30 teams will have a cap hit of over $60 mil once this offseason is over. maybe more (theres a few teams in the low 50's, high 40's that could get to 60 mil as well) there's no room to breathe for anyone, and it's just going to get even worse as the seasons progress
just my $0.02 - but i'd raise the cap to $70 mil next year to make up for the fact that we haven't raised it in two seasons, and then raise it $2mil every year from then on ($72mil, then $74 mil, etc). but i absolutely 100% think it needs to go up.

I would recommend revisiting the FA chart as well. As automatic rerates continue, 3rd liners will be regularly rated 76-77 commanding $3+ mil per year. That combined with a stagnant cap will result in these players getting little to no offers, or taking low ball offers in late rounds of free agency.

I figure to have 20M in space even after signing Perry and Hiller. Maybe you should stop acquiring guys that are making too much and have bad contracts? And then other people will stop handing out ridiculous 10M contracts (or even ridiculous five or seven million dollar contracts for some players) because they won't have the cap room to do that anymore and they'll have to dump them (Krecji for 11 million dollars?!)... You stocked up on front line talent and won a cup and now you can't afford all of them anymore. Just like Chicago did a few years ago. You'll have to retool. It doesn't take any skill to acquire players and not plan ahead or consider their contracts. Giving GMs even more money to waste doesn't solve the problem, it makes the salaries worse.

I guess my point is, we're not going to be able to even use our re-signs because we cant afford to.

All valid points. But nothing will keep GMs from doling out ridiculous contracts. And the point Alex is making, even the lowered paid guys are getting exorbitant raises and the influx of cheap talent via the draft isn't keeping pace with rising salaries. We should make a rule that each team must activate a certain number of prospects every year. Teams like Calgary, NYR and Phoenix has nearly 4 years worth of propects just piling up and not getting any use in the sim. These are players we need to start cycling through the farms so they can begin developing to become useful by the time our current crop is ready to retire.

I'm fine with more young players. I don't understand the limit on activations anyway, other than workload. But if GMs sign Krecji to 11 million dollars or some of the older guys currently at 7M stop bailing them out. Let them live in cap hell. That's how it regulates itself. Make them be stuck with those contracts and then there is more cheap talent for the rest of us.

This isnt about my team. This isnt about your team. This is about fixing a system that doesnt make sense. Citing our teams does nothing to disprove anything i said in ky post. And just for the record; Ive retooled every offseason. Before you joined I had Malkin on my team too. Im at the point now where ill be able to keep the majority of this team, too. This has nothing to do with my team. Its about fixing a system that is flawed. Salary caps and financial issues... this is simmple, basic economics. The system we have is not sustainable in the long term for the reasons ive explained above... plain amd simple.

This will do almost nothing to fix the problems...mostly because FHL is a flawed program Prospects take years to develop. Minimum of 3 years to be a useful pro player. Once that time arrives.... their contracts are expiring and we have to pay them baised on their ratings (even if they havent produced a thing in the pros)

These are players we need to start cycling through the farms so they can begin developing to become useful by the time our current crop is ready to retire. Since I was specifically mentioned here, allow me to address this. First, I took over this club at the end of last season. 9 of those were just drafted in the last week! Why on earth should I be punished for the last GMs prospect hoarding by having to activate junk prospects? And if they're not junk, I eagerly await all of the offers for them!! I have activation plans in place, but to be FORCED to do it? Vehemently against it. You can't penalize a team for building through the draft. And for the teams that need prospects to start cycling through their farms, the teams that have them should then be in a position of strength in trading - no? As to the cap, I would think if you're going to raise the cap, it should be decided upon but put in place three years down the road to give teams lots of time to prepare, and so it's not an advantage to teams that already have too many big money players on the roster.
